It turns out I made bunny_hugger cry by sharing that trivia point. It happens we'd just listened to the Presidents Are People Too podcast (which I quite like) about Chester Alan Arthur, too, which of course gets into Garfield's murder.

There was a lot of public bewailing Garfield's death that seems odd from this remove, when he seems like a footnote, but you look closer and kind of understand why people were saying that an angel had been taken from them.
