I never got into Diplomacy the board game, although I've got to say, the Europa Universalis line of games -- which includes Hearts of Iron -- certainly feel real, even when the twists seem absurd. (Some of them I'm delighted to find happened in actual history books.) Particularly telling, I think, is that I can catch myself repeating mistakes that were made in real history, just because the steps that lead to them are the obvious or easiest way through the problem of the moment.
