``I don't suppose you've heard how IUPAC is making our lives better?''

``They've found a way to dehydrate storage lockers?''

``No, better.''

This is another of those silly dialogues which are a lot of fun for me to write, regardless of how much fun they are to read. The inspiration was the sort of news that I think any would-be humorist could not pass up: a proposal to establish new standards for reporting the atomic weight of boron. It would be hard to find a subject easier to write comically about for 700 words.  )

Trivia: Sir Humphrey Davy named boron by combining the borax the element came from with the carbon it resembled. Source: Nature's Building Blocks: An A-Z Guide To The Elements, John Emsley.
