Springboard Newsroom? That is the software we used on the Apple II's in middle school, and it seemed really quite satisfactory until such time as I got into high school and learned anything else was available. (Although Newsroom was a big step up. I did actual typing on a typewriter and cutting-and-pasting with scissors and rubber cement before that.)
I may overstate in calling my tricks cheap, since they amounted to things like drop shadows and pulling out blurbs from longer articles so there'd be some breaking up of blocks of grey. Mostly, I put whitespace in, which they'd never imagined, but it really stood out for that.
