And there's time for a mathematics-post roundup, so here's some pictures from the Lansing Lugnuts game we went to back in September.

The ballpark hasn't been ``Oldsmobile Park'' since 2010. Oldsmobile hasn't been since 2004.

The game ended after six innings because, well, you see what happened. This went on for about an hour.

While the rain did pass, they ruled that the condition of the field just didn't let them resume playing. From the concession stands, under cover, it wasn't so obvious that hoo boy did they need to call the game.

And any lingering doubts about calling the game were squelched by looking in the dugouts.

Now, my mathematics posts of the past busy week:

Trivia: L Frank Baum would claim to be able to date the naming of Oz by spotting a file cabinet labelled O-Z to the 7th of May, 1898, on the grounds a newspaper headline referenced Admiral Dewey's victory in manila. Source: A Brief Guide To Oz, Paul Simpson. (Simpson notes that Baum had a taste for two-letter place names, such as Ev, Mo, and Ix; Oz fits that pattern.)

Currently Reading: Water For A City: A History of New York City's Problem From The Beginning To The Delaware River System, Charles H Weidner. Yes, it's kind of a dry book.

What do actual people call it? I'm thinking of Candlestick Park, over in the Bay, which is known as such, despite official implorings to the effect of 3Com Park or whomever the sponsor of the week is.

Plus, you wouldn't find these kinds of shenanigans at a basketball game.

Well, it's now named Cooley Stadium, for the Thomas Cooley Law School, which bought naming rights to the stadium. In 2010, the Jackson National Life Insurance Company bought naming rights to the field, within the stadium, although I'm not sure if they've kept up the payments.

I suppose Cooley Stadium is the name people use, if they don't just say ``the ballpark'', or the ``Lugnuts ballpark/stadium''. The only real competitor for ``the ballpark'' in the area would be the one at Michigan State, after all.

If I had to guess I think most people say "the Lugnuts stadium." I miss the name Oldmobile Park because I think Park is a better name than Stadium.

Yeah, that's probably right. Lugnuts Stadium.

I did see that the field still has Jackson National Life written on it, although I don't think the announcer said anything about it.
