Currently Reading: The Last Million: Europe's Displaced Persons from World War to Cold War, David Nasaw. So you know how, when you encounter something incredibly and pointlessly stupid in American history, it turns out the explanation is ``racism''? Yeah will in European affairs the answer is ``Jew-hatred''. And boy is there something powerfully aggravating in white, Christian administrators talking about how the survivors of the Holocaust are being all whiny and entitled with their desire for, like, food and a place where they aren't going to be murdered. And cross that with the Anti Communist Paranoia Whether It Makes A Lick Of Sense Or Not. (Soooo many racist Senators, but I repeat myself, determined that the people who'd been in displaced persons camps for years, refusing to return to Communist-led homelands, were secret Communists, and the fact that nobody could find evidence of this proved how good they were at the secrecy.) (Now, granted, there is a fair argument that it wasn't known how many of these people were refusing repatriation because they were fascists, or fascist collaborators. But to act on that base would require a strong anti-fascist streak in American politics.)
