Made it out, safely and securely, to California for my first visit to a part of the state other than its airports since I visited a loved one in San Jose in 1998. I'm nowhere near Silicon Valley now (I'm in Pomona, well served by scenic Ontario International Airport, photoessay to follow), but I wouldn't have time to visit anyway. I don't even have time to write this.

The Special Attention I was given this time around -- I get something every time I fly from one U.S. spot to another -- came at Newark, when the guards asked if they could see the iBook for an extra test. Near as I could tell this test consisted of rubbing a cotton swab across my touchpad. I guess they're screening for obsessively high levels of Curell antibacterial hand lotion. (I know, I know, but it's a convention, I'm obsessive-compulsive, i'm entitled to use the stuff.)

I think the screener also damaged the little foam pad that separates keyboard from screen that most people would have thrown away when they got the computer, in my case, two years ago, that I saved because I am obsessive-compulsive and just can't throw stuff out like that. (Actually, it's a replacement foam pad, and there's a ridiculous story behind that too.)

At Denver of course I had to go from one terminal to another. The ``arriving'' and ``departing'' tunes on their little inter-terminal shuttle happen to be the ``level completed'' chimes from any Neo-Geo arcade game ever made.

Trivia: Thomas Eakins made his professional debut in the last of a series of three art receptions sponsored by the Union League of Philadelphia in April 1871. Thomas Eakins, Darrel Swewll.

Currently Reading: The Stars My Destination, Alfred Bester.

Indeed! Next time, Mr Dern, you should attempt to stop over somewhere closer to Blither and me. =:)

I would have, happily, if I could have. Perhaps for my next trip I'll be able to arrange a brief lingering in the Silicon Valley area. I didn't have much flexibility this time around. I've barely had time to sleep.

Erp? Which books ... the only furry-related stuff I remember from The Stars My Destination is the brief stretch with the mermaids and centaurs and such, unless you count the tiger-face tattoos.

Sorry... if you looked at the avitar for blither... what he/she has there is the cover of I think Fuzzys... a golden oddissy... so the comment was aimed more to them. The Fuzzies are the aliens in those books.

Originally done by H Beam Piper... he did several other books but killed himself right before his carrear really took off. Two other books were done by other authors after that. Fuzzy Bones and Golden Dream.

Its just that I really liked those books... so when I saw the icon I couldn't resist.

Snugs.

Sorry to confuse you so.

Ah, I see ... I believe I've read Piper's books, but it was a long while ago. I believe they were re-issued recently, too.

I'll be flying over on Tuesday if that helps any. I'll wave if I see California.

I had a rather good time, in fact. Pomona struck me as Schenectady with palm trees, a rather interesting blend of scenes for Pulp Fiction fan fiction and the occasional Internet cafe that couldn't handle Macs. I liked the campus, too; wonderfully styled for what it was trying to be, even if their wireless networking was awful where it existed at all, and stuff was closed Friday for something labelled ``9/80,'' as if that were an explanation.

Oh.... the Ontario International Airport is a nice little airport down there. Has all kinds of flights and is actually easy to get to without all the hassle of something like LAX.

C-eagle is in that area... he used to hang out on TFF. Long time ago.

I rather liked the little place (see my June 20 entry), although I ended up going through Los Angeles International anyway. I didn't know C the Eagle was in the neighborhood either ... he visits Spindizzy on rare occasion, mostly to apologize for not visiting more.

Dangit, I wish you'd told me the conference was in Pomona. That's not terribly far from where I live (Ontario Airport is a fifteen minute drive from my apartment in Riverside), and I would have grabbed you sometime after the conference closed shop for the evening one night and just bugged you to death.

But if you're really busy with the whole conference thing right now, I guess it wouldn't have mattered anyway. But next time - say something! Even if it's just to say hi. :D

Aw, boy, I'm sorry. I had the idea you were rather closer to San Diego, somehow. I'm afraid the only free time I had was a little while during the Lakers game and after about 11 p.m. Friday -- with my flight at 9:30 a.m. Saturday -- but it would have been great to really meet you. I hope the next time I'm out there is soon.

Woot! Denver airport! Did you get to see the secret Nazi mind-control mural? http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Denver_Airport.html

(the "weid-ass Mural" link at the bottom is broken. Use the 'page' links at the very bottom of the page.)

I did not see, or at least did not notice, the mural. I did see the odd concrete nipples featured at the top of the first page, though.
