I ... finished.
Not that the book is done, mind you. It's not compiled into a PDF, and I'm missing some pictures, including a few I have to re-generate and some my co-writer has to send me, and there's stuff that needs editing and smoothing down including two chapters that need to be merged together, but ... it's a draft. It reads like a more or less coherent book, and I sent it off to my co-writer for his opinions and notes about rewriting, and of course later on we'll have the publisher's reviews. But I don't have to do more writing, just rewriting.
It's so strange; for the first time in a year and a half -- since the days right after finishing my thesis paperwork -- I don't have anything I really have to do, at least not in my role of researcher and author. Wow.
To celebrate I'm going to watch a Mystery Science Theater 3000 I've never seen before (Monster-a-go-go) and then ... I don't know, but we'll see.
I don't have anything I have to get to tomorrow.

Date: 2004-12-03 02:32 am (UTC)Well, there's to be a bit of a rush fixing anything my co-writer needs patched up before we send things to Springer-Verlag, but yes, for the moment, I don't have to start doing anything particular.

Date: 2004-12-03 02:37 am (UTC)Oh, yes, that was a twist ending of some form. I'm awestruck by the film.

Date: 2004-12-03 02:40 am (UTC)And I'm not sure if it's been pointed out but this was almost certainly one of the reasons Apollo 13 wasn't simply postponed a month when Charlie Duke got sick and Ken Mattingly was exposed; waiting the 28 days for the next launch window wouldn't put the LM quite into the danger zone, but it did guarantee if there were any other delays they'd have to return the Saturn V to the Vehicle Assembly Building and replace the LM.
We can't know how things might have turned out, but it would have been delicious if they'd ultimately had to de-stack and found the oxygen tank problem in the Service Module by doing so.

Date: 2004-12-03 02:44 am (UTC)Actually, the book was fun and I wouldn't mind writing another, although I'd need to better pace myself; I shouldn't have let myself get into the crunch I did the past month.
You know, there aren't any popularizations written explaining statistical mechanics, which is a shame, because it's probably the most amazing intersection of mathematics and physics. I mean, you can start from completely abstract first principles, follow dozens of approximations and simplifications, and then come up with stunningly accurate predictions of real systems' physical properties. You don't get that anywhere else.

Date: 2004-12-02 09:01 pm (UTC)Oh boy, Monster-a-go-go.... yeah, you'll really like the ending on this one, though to be fair, its not an approach I've seen duplicated anywhere. :) I think this movie tops my list of worst movies I've seen on MST3K.

Date: 2004-12-03 02:46 am (UTC)Thank you, and it really does. I didn't know how stressed I was by it until I sent the files off.
And, hoo, yeah, the movie's a real force-ten brain-imploder. Every scene just seems to exist in a different film from every other one.
