I'm not positive of the exact count -- the critters are hard to track -- but if I'm not mistaken there are at least four geckos in my apartment, ranging in size from about a quarter's to the better part of a foot long. They really move when they want, mind, but their wall- and ceiling-climbing tricks are beautiful. There may be only a few freelance squirrels in Singapore, but there are other wonders of nature.

Some people may have noticed in The Onion's news in brief for 25 February the article Thai Premier Eats Entire Bucket Of Chicken To Calm Bird-Flu Fears. Granted the average difference between The Onion and reality is about two weeks, but normally The Onion leads reality. In fact, Thai, Vietnamese, and Indonesian officials have been very publicly having big chicken meals and pretty much daring the press to eat, in the hopes of calming bird flu fears. They've been local dishes, for the most part; I don't think anyone's eaten a bucket of friend chicken (mind, Kentucky Fried Chicken is all over the place, and perfectly reasonable in taste), but the premise of the joke ... just isn't one. Sorry to disappoint them. But I did love the ``Most Popular T-Shirt Slogans, 2092'' sidebar.

Trivia: English King Richard II, 1367-1400, is credited with inventing the handkerchief and the codpiece. Source: Shakespeare's Kings: The great plays and the history of England in the Middle Ages, 1337-1485, John Julius Norwich.

Currently Reading: Astounding Days: A Science Fictional Autobiography, Arthur C Clarke. (This is one of the books I reread each year or so, and savor. It's about the stories of Astounding, 1930 through 1945, and Clarke's life reading them, with many diversions to related topics. I can't recommend it highly enough.)

I thought the premise of the joke was that the people were scared that he could scarf down 20 pieces of chicken because it was way too much food for one person to eat, not because of anything to do with bird flu.

Well, yeah, fifteen pieces really isn't an enormous enough amount of chicken to make it all that absurd. Or maybe I'm too close to grad student life to see any amount of food eaten at once as being too big. It's still pretty close to what I can see on the Channel i News at 8:30.

Ah, KFC.

KFC was a beacon of familiarity in a world that seemed twisted ninety degrees from what we knew, when [livejournal.com profile] krdbuni and I were in Thailand. The funny thing is that our favorite item there was the wasabi popcorn chicken, which is utterly unavailable over in the States, and was only a promotional thing there....

whine! Wasabi popcorn chicken! Gods.. tell me it tastes rotten, and I should never think of such a thing, please.

Wasabi. Herb (?) of the gods.. fwiw, might you have some sort of diary of that voyage online? I wanted to see Thailand while I was in East Asia in 2001, but wound up spending all my time with friends in Singapore and Malaysia. ^_^;; I'd wanted to go up the jungle line from LK to the eastern border, and thence Chang Mai.

(Do you recall we exchanged email a couple years back? I forget the topics, but it involved your music, amongst other things)

Geez!

Just buy some horseradish at the grocery store and dip your chicken in it, already.

Nonono! Not until I find a horseradish I can grow which approximates wasabi; I know very few (myself included) have ever tried real wasabi, as it's fairly rare, and much milder than what's come to be known as wasabi, fluorescent green, sorbitol and all.

Meanwhile, tube paste, or even the powders, do work really nicely in complementing chicken. Even on pizza! (The powdered versions, that is) But you perhaps shouldn't take my word for it. ^_^

But, I am set for the meantime, courtesy of a visit to the Fremont Ranch 99, where I took the precaution of obtaining a few tubes of the usual stuff. Superb in stir-fries, too, I might add.

Now I can't help wondering -- Porsupah, did your local Cartoon Network run the advertisements just before Christmas featuring Mojo Jojo singing about his famous sushi dishes? It was done to the tune of ``Silent Night.'' Wasabi plays heavily in the refrain.

Oh, I wish I'd caught those! But, I actually watch surprisingly little "live" TV these days - the PPG episodes I've been enjoying recently arrived over the net. The roomie does have the local CN, but I think I may have all the episodes now, seasons 1-4, including the three DVDs which were spotted in the wild, but not the mythical fourth, e'er listed as out of stock.

On the other paw, there was "Child Fearing", which featured Mojo Jojo[1] as the girls' babysitter for the night, wherein he gets to show off his culinary skills. Quite impressive, though sadly entirely unappreciated. Poor monkey. ^_^

[1] Perhaps not the place to use an initials acronym.

This wasn't an episode; it was just one of the little filler ads they put up so local cable companies can sell ad space. So for thirty seconds or so various not-bad animation showed Mojo Jojo in the midst of doing the things described while the words flowed across the screen. I have to think what the lyrics were, though.

I have no journal of the adventure, but [livejournal.com profile] krdbuni does, further back in her diary than her LJ mentions. This entry (http://www.menagerie.tf/~buni/personal/2002/2002-03-01.shtml) is pretty much the start of that whole trip, though the entirety of the journal is background story and aftermath and all sorts of other stuff, so be warned... also, our time in Thailand was far from a vacation. There's a reason we were eating KFC and not experiementing with local cuisine for most of it.

And I distantly recall that. I'm still working on music, but it's taken an interesting turn nowadays... and eating up my time, so I'll cut the post off here. *grin*

I've read enough of yours to understand the journey, and I'm terribly happy for you both. ^_^ I'm so happy that you're able to find yourself, and have someone special there in your life too.. I do hope you realise how fortunate you are? ^_^

(I've added you both as Friends)
